Please stop asking us to become republicans, because given a choice the average voter would choose the real McCoy over our poor imitation. Just today, I read a ridiculous diary saying we should abandon Roe altogether. We should just forget our guarantees to women all over the United States that we would stand and fight for their bodily autonomy, but because we lost an election and now our stances are perceived as “out of step”. You’ve got people saying this bullshit on the Democratic side. It seems like they’re shouting shit like this from the rooftops all over the place. Hell no. We wont abandon Roe. Women DESERVE the right to choose. And when that was lost we all said we would fight like hell to return Roe, to somehow codify it and make it law. But no, we lost like 2% of the popular vote. I guess all that “defend women” shit was just BS.
Or Joe and Mika’s stupid performative trip to Mar-a-Lago so they don’t get harassed by a sitting president. Isn’t the real news story that they felt so threatened that they felt they had to go to Mar-a-Lago to kiss the Don’s ring instead of reporting that they were feeling a bit scared of the consequences of their previous criticism of the president, and what that says about the potential for curtailment of the first amendment under a Trump administration, and what and how to fight that. THAT would have been light and not heat, that would have furthered a conversation, not killed their careers dead in its tracks. That might have even come close to some real journalism had they had other journalists to express the fears they have over the curtailment of the freedom of press under Trump. But no, we have Joe and Mika new and improved 2016 version back. The consummate trump fluffers. The tingles up the leg during phone calls. OF FUCKING COURSE Trump is like “we are SO back” because people like you are bending the knee and he isn’t even the president yet.
How about Durbin absolutely CRUMBLING on judges, performatively obeying Republican rule because he's afraid he's toast in his next election? Like come on, you can’t even use your power during the supposed twilight of democracy to mitigate some of the harm coming our way? You just had to be a coward because you think your bacon is being cooked. Typical republican lite pre-caving to buoy their election chances. Right out of the milquetoast middle play book and enough to make anyone on the left gag.
NONE of this will save us from Trump nor even help restore democracy. In fact, it does the opposite. It turns people off. People see Trump acting like “a real man” then they see us cave over and over and over again because we are afraid of our own shadows. THE ONLY WAY forward is resistance. Not caving to republican demands. Not acting more like republicans. Not trying to understand the “economic anxiety” of white males, not chasing the mushy middle. We should be resisting Trump and the republican agenda. At all levels. All throughout this four years. We need to become the republicans during the Obama era — nothing and I mean nothing gets through. Will any of that happen? Naw. Because it seems like hiding is a better option to dems rather than upset the applecart. It would be nice for those blue dog democrats to stop fucking pre-caving to these assholes. It makes us look like diet republican, and nobody wants the diet version of anything.
